Introduction

Le Grand Pressigny is a small town (population about 1000) 60 km (40 miles) to the south of the city of Tours. It is close to the famous Châteaux de la Loire (Loches, Amboise, Chenonceau and Azay le Rideau ), the Spa town of la Roche Posay and the Brenne.

Le Grand Pressigny is also the main town in a district with communities maintaining a deep sense of tradition: le Grand Pressigny, le Petit Pressigny, la Celle Guenand Saint Flovier, Ferrière Larçon, Betz le Château, Paulmy, la Guerche and Barrou.

Agriculture is still the main economic activity and provides the local gastronomic restaurants with prime produce (goat's cheese, foie gras, smoked duck etc.).

The tuffeau limestone farmhouses are characteristic of the region and the chateaux that dominate the region (le Grand Pressigny, Étableau, la Cell Guenand, la Guerche, Ré, Paulmy and le Châtelier) are built of the same stone. It is, however, the flint embedded in the limestone that has brought fame to the district.

The district around le Grand Pressigny is wooded and cut by several rivers: the Claise and its tributaries the Aigronne, the Brignon and the Muanne, and it is bounded by the Creuse. For nature lovers, there are many country walks and rides for discovering the richness of the local flora and fauna.
